The Highbury Lecture

The site of of the church (formerly 'Highbury Chapel’) has a rich and troubled history that Dr Evan Jones of Bristol University will bring vividly to life in this public lecture. The High Cross (‘Bewell Cross”) marking the former city boundary stood alongside the Gallows where a significant number of ‘felons’ were hanged. During the Reformation Period five Protestants were burned for their opposition to the reign of Catholic Queen Mary. Dr Jones speaks of the executions as acts of public theatre, and you can look forward to a lively account of the history of ‘Highbury’.

A special beer (“Bewell Beer”) has been brewed for the occasion of the lecture and will be available from a donations bar.
